WhatsApp Message Templates

Create and manage approved WhatsApp templates for outbound messaging.

Why Templates Are Required

WhatsApp Business API requires pre-approved message templates for initiating conversations. You cannot send freeform messages to customers unless they've messaged you within the past 24 hours.

Template Categories

  • Utility: Transactional updates (order confirmations, shipping notifications)
  • Authentication: OTP and verification codes
  • Marketing: Promotional offers, product announcements, newsletters

Creating Templates

  • Go to Templates in the sidebar
  • Click New Template
  • Choose category, language, and enter your message with variables
  • Submit for Meta review (usually approved within 24 hours)

Template Variables

Use numbered placeholders: {{1}}, {{2}}, etc. When sending, you provide the actual values for each placeholder.

Example: Hello {{1}}, your order {{2}} has been shipped via {{3}}.

Best Practices

  • Keep templates concise and clear
  • Avoid promotional language in Utility templates (Meta will reject them)
  • Include an opt-out option in Marketing templates
  • Test templates with a small audience before large-scale sends
